The Impact of Broadband on Rural Communities in Gloucestershire
In rural Gloucestershire, the council's partnership with Fastershire has provided access to reliable broadband, significantly transforming how communities engage, support one another, and navigate challenges. Jean Waters' story exemplifies the profound effect of gigabit capable broadband on rural residents and their contributions to society.
Jean stated, "I'm a trustee of a disability charity. I chair various meetings for Gloucestershire, such as the Physical Disability Sensory Impairment Board. I also chair a steering group for NHS England on wheelchairs. All those commitments are physically challenging if I have to attend them all in person. However, utilising a computer and, most importantly, the internet means I can make a meaningful contribution to the best of my ability."
The onset of the war in Ukraine presented a unique opportunity for Jean and her husband to support refugees by hosting a family fleeing the conflict. Their initiative, undertaken through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, illustrates the critical role of broadband in building connections and support systems.
Upon being matched with a family from Zhytomyr, Jean and her husband established communication through email and video calls. This virtual interaction was vital in building trust and ensuring a smooth transition for the arriving family. Studies have shown that face-to-face interactions, even through digital platforms, enhance relationships and develop a sense of community.
The family's arrival at Jean's home allowed Alena, a mother who teaches English in Ukrainian schools, to use the gigabit capable broadband connection to continue teaching online, ensuring the continuity of education for her students back home. This scenario highlights how broadband facilitates the preservation of educational ties and employment opportunities, even from abroad.
Internet access has been crucial in maintaining connections between the family and their loved ones in Ukraine. Irina, Alena's twin sister, who remains in Ukraine, relies on daily internet communication, underscoring the role of technology in supporting mental well-being and family bonds during crises.
Jean's story exemplifies how the digital divide is bridged through technology, enabling rural residents to adapt and thrive despite challenges. The impact of faster broadband infrastructure extends beyond connectivity; it empowers individuals to contribute actively to society and build meaningful relationships, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life in rural communities.
