National Highways to close M5 between junctions 11 and 12 for footbridge demolition
The bridges have deteriorated and must be removed before they become a safety risk.
The works are expected to have a significant impact on traffic in and around Gloucester, and Gloucestershire County Council is working closely with National Highways to raise awareness of the closures and help minimise congestion where possible.
Planned closures:
11 October onwards
M5 northbound junction 11a exit slip road
- Closed 24 hours a day from 8pm on 11 October for approximately two weeks.
- Drivers will still be able to leave the motorway at junction 11 and continue their journeys.
16 to 19 October: Full weekend closure
M5 in both directions between junctions 11 and 12 (including junction 11a)
- Closed from 11pm on Friday 16 October until 6am on Monday 19 October.

Advice for drivers
National Highways is urging motorists to:
- Follow signed diversion routes rather than relying on satnavs.
- Consider travelling at a different time or using alternative travel options where possible.
- Allow extra time for journeys, as diversion routes are expected to be busy.
- Drive considerately through local communities, as many surrounding roads are not designed to accommodate high volumes of traffic.
We recognise that multiple roadworks and closures in the area may cause disruption for residents, businesses and road users. Gloucestershire County Council is working closely with National Highways and other partners to help manage traffic and minimise the impact on local communities wherever possible.
