The Member Development Programme
The Member Development Programme has been designed to enable Members to develop the skills and knowledge required to perform their duties. The calendar of events for 2024 can be found below. The page will be updated regularly as new training sessions and resources are added. Members are encouraged to attend all sessions where possible.
As well as internally run training, the programme will highlight specific events hosted by the Local Government Association (LGA). Members are also welcome to explore other webinars provided by the LGA by following this link. If there are any LGA events that you wish to attend, please contact rosie.kenyon@gloucestershire.gov.uk or laura.powick@gloucestershire.gov.uk for help with registering your attendance. Members are also encouraged to make use of the LGA's e-learning resources.

Handling Online Abuse and Intimidation |

Many councillors are reporting unprecedented levels of abuse and threats on social media and are keen to learn strategies on how to manage posts which are potentially defamatory, inappropriate or threatening. This practical programme which is government funded will provide attendees with an awareness of the steps that can be taken to manage trolls and cyber-bullies, including a gentle introduction to the legal framework around social media posts. The session will include guidance on how to be safe online generally, as well as tips on how to create a positive online presence. |

Leading good governance and assurance |

Recent high-profile examples of council failures have led to an increased awareness of the importance of good governance and assurance. The Local Government Association’s work to map the improvement and assurance framework for local government has identified key member roles and responsibilities, in addition to officer roles, which are necessary to ensure good governance and assurance.

Improving Support for Care Leavers |

Being a corporate parent means doing everything we can for every care leaver, to give them the opportunities, experiences and support that other young people get. It is also about being ambitious for the young people we are corporate parents to, encouraging them to dream big and supporting them to thrive as they navigate adult life. Corporate parenting is about asking “would this be good enough for my child?” Aimed at all councillors, and any officers who want to learn more about their corporate parenting responsibilities and good practice, this session will provide you with practical ideas and advice about how to be a good corporate parent. Hearing directly from young people with care experience, it will also cover the type of support care leavers want to see and best practice in delivering a local offer for care leavers. |

High Streets: how planning changes affect local strategies |

The government has introduced a series of reforms that aim to help high streets respond more flexibly to the changing demands for space. The LGA has commissioned consultants Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH) to assess the impact and potential consequences of these changes. In this virtual event, LSH will present their findings, alongside insights from practitioners, about how they have delivered High Street strategies and adapted to recent planning changes. |

In the long-term the LGA are calling for a national solution. |
