Frequently used terminology

Terminology

A number of terms are used when barriers to attendance are experienced. These can be confusing for schools, parents, carers and children and young people.

Terminology has included:

  • school refusal;
  • school phobia;
  • school avoidance;
  • parentally condoned absence;
  • truancy;
  • persistent absenteeism.

These terms can appear to put responsibility or blame on the child or young person and their families. It is, therefore, important to consider the language that we use when communicating. There are a variety of reasons why children and young people experience barriers to attending school; the interplay of these factors can be complex and it is important to support the children and young person's needs holistically.
