Developmental Language Difficulties ~ Raising Awareness Day | 17th October 2025
We continue with our support for raising awareness for DLD. This campaign recognises the significant impact language difficulty may have on children’s attainment at school. It may also impact children’s social and emotional wellbeing.
Areas that may be impacted by DLD include:
-
-
Speech Sounds
-
Social language
-
Learning and memory
-
Discourse
-
Schools can helpfully support children by:
-
-
Using shorter sentences, chunking information, and giving only one instruction at a time
-
-
-
Setting out instructions visually using ‘task plans’
-
-
-
Repeating questions
-
-
-
Using pictures, gestures and signs to help children understand
-
-
-
Giving timely reminders about what was said
-
-
-
Checking children really understand by careful questioning that goes beyond, 'Do you understand?'
-
Speech and Language Therapists are able to help schools to support children with these communication needs
