Kinship Carers Week | 6-12 October 2025
Kinship care is when a child is looked after by a relative or close family friend if their parent is unable to provide care due to a range of causes, such as loss or instability within the family home.
It has been identified that this group of families and young people may be a ‘hidden population’. By raising awareness of these families within Gloucestershire and in your school community, greater understanding can support positive outcomes in education.
Research indicates that schools and settings can support in four key areas:
-
Developing awareness and understanding of this population with school staff
-
Applying trauma-informed and relational approaches
-
Supporting kinship families
-
Signposting for further advice and support
