SPIED Opportunities Bulletin - supporting youth employability in Gloucestershire
What is the SPIED opportunities bulletin?
This bulletin from the Youth Support Team provides a practical guide to education, employment and training pathways for 16–18 year-olds across Gloucestershire. It is updated monthly and designed as an accessible and engaging resource, collating a wide range of opportunities, support and guidance to help young people take positive steps in their education, training or employment future. SPIED ensures young people have access to live vacancies across Gloucestershire, including the Forest of Dean, Tewkesbury and the Cotswolds. July's bulletin can be accessed via the 'downloads' section of the Youth Support Team record on Gloucestershire's Local Offer website, Support for Families with SEND.
Understanding Further Education
The bulletin also outlines the various routes into further education, including sixth forms and colleges such as Gloucestershire College Cirencester College and SGS, alongside guidance on how to apply and details of open events.
Alternative study programmes
It also provides comprehensive information on alternative study programmes such as Bridge Training and Prospects Training which cater to different needs, including re-engagement pathways, mentoring support, functional skills qualifications and work experience.
These programmes often incorporate pastoral care, confidence-building activities, and personalised learning plans to ensure young people are supported holistically.
Focus on employability
The bulletin details employability schemes such as Spear Training and Commercial Foundations, both aiming to advance communication, teamwork and interview skills whilst offering real-world work experience. It details employability support across the county, including the Churn Project in Cirencester and GL11 club in Dursley, both of which offer 1:1 job searching support. It also signposts young people to appropriate job searching platforms and recruitment agencies.
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are also strongly promoted as a beneficial pathway as it combines paid employment whilst gaining qualifications and career progression. The bulletin offers detailed guidance on finding an apprenticeship and a clear explanation on what an apprenticeship is.
Personal development, creativity and wellbeing
This bulletin provides information about opportunities such as the Kings Trust team programme, creative arts programmes, music mentoring and sustainability focused activities that encourage self-expression and confidence. It also outlines community initiatives, including Access Bike in Stroud, a hands-on mechanical workshop, and further creative sessions, supporting mental health in informal and engaging environments.
Volunteering and work experience
Volunteering and work experience are a prominent part of SPIED, with opportunities across sectors such as healthcare, conservation, community services and the police. These experiences act as valuable stepping stones by enabling young people to gain skills, insight into different careers and experience to add to their CV.
Virtual learning resources
There are free online courses from institutions such as the Open University and Harvard University, allowing for flexible and independent study. Online learning is a key addition, ensuring young people have access to education regardless of their personal circumstances.
This resource takes an inclusive and holistic approach to connect young people with suitable education, training and employment pathways. It promotes courses which encompass confidence building, independence and aspiration. SPIED plays a vital role in supporting 16–18 year-olds in Gloucestershire developing and exploring their options.
