Two-way traffic set to return
The Black Dog Way and London Road improvement scheme is entering its final major construction phase, with overnight works in November paving the way for London Road and Alvin Street to return to two-way traffic.
To complete this stage safely, Black Dog Way, Bruton Way and London Road will close overnight from 8pm to 5am on 16 to 20 November and 23 to 24 November 2026. Signed diversions will be in place, and the roads will reopen by 5am after each night’s work, with no weekend closures. The work is planned for these dates, weather permitting. We’ll keep residents, businesses and road users informed of any changes as soon as possible.
During the closures, crews will resurface the roads, install road markings and complete work required for the new traffic signals. From 17 November, during the day the temporary mini roundabout will be removed, and the junction will be controlled by temporary signals, with the one-way system still in place.
Once the overnight works are complete, the temporary one-way arrangements on London Road and Alvin Street are expected to be lifted, allowing both roads to return to two-way traffic from the morning of 25 November. As the permanent traffic signals are brought into operation, temporary three-way signals will then be implemented at the Bruton Way, Black Dog Way and London Road junction between 25 and 27 November. Some delays may occur during this period, so road users are advised to allow additional time for their journeys.
Cllr Roger Whyborn said:
“These overnight works mark a significant milestone for the Black Dog Way and London Road improvement scheme and will allow us to complete the final major phase of construction.
“We recognise that road closures can be disruptive, which is why the work will be carried out overnight to reduce the number of people affected. We’re aiming to remove all temporary traffic management and complete the entire works ahead of Christmas, helping to keep commuters and shoppers moving and supporting local shops and businesses during the festive period.”
“We would like to thank residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience while these important improvements are completed.”
Access during the works
During the overnight closures, Alvin Street will be accessible via Kingsholm Road only, and anyone travelling to the hospital should follow the signed diversion. During the day, the hospital will remain accessible via London Road or the signed diversion, with the temporary one-way arrangements on London Road and Alvin Street remaining in place until the morning of 25 November.
Pedestrian access along London Road, Black Dog Way and Bruton Way will be maintained throughout the works, although some routes and crossing points will temporarily change. The temporary pedestrian crossing on Bruton Way will remain open during the day but close in the evenings. During these closures, pedestrians heading towards London Road should use the crossing near Gloucester Transport Hub.
The Northgate Street bus gate will remain closed to buses and taxis until the permanent traffic signals are fully operational. The existing restriction preventing vehicles from turning right from London Road onto Black Dog Way will also remain in place.
