Theme 3: Training
Providers highlighted a need for more specialist training, particularly around dementia, complex mental health conditions and behavioural needs. It was recognised that there is a need to upskill staff to meet the needs of the individuals they support.
Providers generally preferred face-to-face training where possible and recognised that the ‘train-the-trainer’ model is effective although can be expensive. Training should also be recognised as transferable across the sector to avoid duplication.
Deterrents to training included the cost (in terms of time and money), suitability and availability. One mitigation to this which was suggested was cross-organisational collaboration to share resources, such as joint training days or sharing train-the trainer ‘champions’ across care settings.
