Choosing an agent or contractor
Some advice below if you are choosing an agent or building contractor to do the work
- Consider using an agent from the council’s Agent (project managers) list where possible.
- Gloucestershire Trading Standards also supports 'buy with confidence,' which is an approved trader scheme.
- Trustmark is the only UK Government approved trusted trader scheme and includes robust standards, dispute resolution services, and added protection by way of insurance backed warranties.
- Try to use a builder from a recognised trade association. The National Home Improvement Council has a list of member organisations on their website.
- Ask contractors to provide details of previous clients who can be contacted for a reference.
- You can search online for reviews and they may have a website or use social media, like Facebook and X.
- Gas engineers must be registered with gas safe.
- Electrical contractors should be registered with a national competent person scheme
- Builders registered with any competent builders approved scheme
- Always check the agent or contractor’s name and address. You can use online directories or visit Companies House if they are a limited company.
