Training

The public health team in Gloucestershire County Council organises additional and bespoke training courses in mental health awareness, suicide awareness/prevention, postvention and other areas.  

These free courses are available to those working/volunteering in public and VCS sector and community groups, who come across members of the public.

Only attendees who have reserved a place will be able to attend (click on the arrows against each course for information on how to book a place). Anyone who turns up without a confirmed place may be turned away.

Course objectives:

  • To explore:
    • Why men’s mental wellbeing is important
    • Men, masculinity, socialisation and help seeking behaviour
    • How masculinity may impact how men experience mental health and poor mental wellbeing
    • How we can all more effectively support men to overcome poor mental wellbeing, maintain good mental wellbeing and access appropriate support when needed

This course provides learners with essential knowledge and practical tools to understand that suicide is among the most preventable causes of death. Participants will develop core skills to engage in supportive conversations with individuals showing signs of suicidal ideation, and learn how to connect them with trained professionals for further help.

Course Objectives

    • Explores the stigma and survivors of bereavement by suicide and the ‘Hidden Toll’.
    • Suicide thoughts and suicide behaviour.
    • Examines possible causes of suicide thoughts.
    • Provides a framework to recognise and ask about suicide.

The course takes an in-depth look at common mental health illnesses such as depression and anxiety, challenges stigma and teaches participants about stress, alarm bells, coping methods, recovery, self-care and so much more!

With a strong focus on how to get help beyond the medical model, Mental Wellbeing First Aid creates hope and positive action.

This course qualifies you as a ‘Mental Wellbeing First Aider’ in the workplace. Delegates will receive a handy resource pack including a combined workbook & manual, A.C.T.I.O.N.S.© card, and e-certificate.
