Definition / scope

The Board supports all unpaid carers (this does not include (paid) care workers who are employed to support those with needs in the community, care homes or peoples own homes, as there are other forums who provide this).

  • A carer is - somebody, of any age, who provides support or who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of frailty, physical or mental illness, or disability.
  • A parent carer is - somebody over the age of 18 who has a child aged 0-25 who has any disability, special educational needs, long-term health condition, impairment or additional need.
  • A young carers is - somebody under the age of 18 who provides regular or ongoing care and/or emotional support to a family member. A "Young Adult Carer" is aged 16-24.
