Flood wardens

Flood Wardens are volunteers who play an important role in the warning and prevention of flooding within their community. They are a vital link between local residents and those responsible for responding to an incident.

Local knowledge and involvement is invaluable to organisations involved in flooding; to help increase community preparedness and to support the recovery phase.

Flood wardens are known to their community and can support them in a number of ways. Some examples of what the role may include are:

  • Monitoring local watercourses and drainage;
  • Ensuring residents are aware of any flood warnings and encouraging them to sign up to receive flood warnings from the Environment Agency;
  • Identifying vulnerable members of the community who may need more support;
  • Reporting flood events and local observations to the appropriate organisation; and
  • Helping to prepare a community flood plan with the relevant organisations.
