Anti-idling case study

In 2025, Tewkesbury Borough Council delivered a school-based air quality project, funded by £9,000 from Gloucestershire County Council and £1,000 from the council's Climate Change Reserve. The project aimed to raise awareness of the impact of vehicle idling and encourage sustainable travel among primary school communities.

All primary schools in the borough were invited to design banners and posters promoting anti-idling messages. Four schools took part, with bespoke banners produced for each participating school. Gotherington Primary School's winning design was featured in a wider campaign and has been displayed in all council-owned car parks across the borough. The school also received a funded school trip and £2,000 towards an air quality improvement project or activity.

To extend the campaign's reach, additional posters were made available for other schools to use, including a generic design provided by Teddington Primary School. In total, 20 signs featuring the winning design were installed in borough car parks, and banners were delivered to participating schools.
