Bedroom

Did you know spend around one-third of our life in bed? It can be easy to forget about energy efficiencies and saving in a room where we don’t spend very much of our time awake! However, there are plenty of things which we can do to be more mindful of the energy use while we sleep.

Keep it cool

Try keeping your bedroom temperature slightly lower than your living spaces. Lower temperatures are better for sleeping so reducing the temperature of your thermostat overnight could save you money and help you sleep better.

Leave a gap

Keeping a gap between your radiators and furniture allows the heat to circulate around the room more efficiently. This allows you to feel more of the benefits of your heating and enable you to lower the temperature of your room at night.

Use blankets

Adding any extra duvets and blankets you have at home will really help to keep you warm and comfortable at night. Try putting your blanket under the duvet as it is much more effective at keeping you warm under than on top.

Close your curtains

When the sun sets, head upstairs and shut the curtains. This will help keep the heat locked inside your room and reduce heat loss by up to 17% [EDF]

Seasonal duvets

Think about investing in seasonal duvets. You can purchase duvets that have a higher Tog rating for the winter to keep you warm and a lower Tog rating in the summer to keep you cool. This will allow you to rely less on your heating while in bed.

Up your Tog number

Buying thermal lined curtains or lining your current curtains with a thermal liner is a great way to help lock the heat into your room at night. The thermal liner reduces heat loss through the fabric and keeps the cold from coming into the room through your windows too.

Heat the person not the room

Try using an electric blanket or hot water bottle to heat your bed. This is far more energy efficient than using the central heating to warm the room.

Plug the gaps

Drafts will hinder many of our energy saving ideas so have a good search for any spots that may be causing a draft and making your room feel too cold. Using draft proof tape around your windows and doors as well as using draft excluders (or just a rolled up towel) for your doors will make a huge difference.

Glazing

Consider investing in double glazing your windows. Full window replacements are expensive, but you can also get temporary secondary glazing that is much more affordable and can help save significant amounts of energy.
