Understanding mental health

Mental health support in Gloucestershire includes both healthcare services provided by the NHS and social care support provided by Gloucestershire County Council.

What kind of mental health problems are there?

There are many different types of mental health problems. You might have symptoms that fit more than one diagnosis, or experience more than one condition at the same time. Common mental health problems include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Eating problems
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Personality disorders

Mental health problems are different from learning disabilities or autism. However, you can experience both.

You can find out more about disabilities on our disabilities pages. For more information on dementia, visit the NHS website.

What causes mental health problems?

Mental health problems can be caused by many different things. Some people are more affected by certain experiences than others.

Common triggers include:

  • loneliness
  • bereavement (losing someone close to you)
  • stress
  • long-term physical health conditions
  • unemployment
  • social factors (such as income  or housing)
  • a combination of any of these.
