Our street light dimming – a case study

Our current dimming regimes for our street lighting equipment are achieved through use of our Central Management System(CMS). This system is fitted to most our street lighting and this allows us to communicate with our streetlights through a web-based software portal. It provides information on the operational status of an individual light and allows us to programme the light levels required for groups of lights.

We have circa 62,500 streetlights and the dimming regimes for these are as follows:-

Traffic Route Lighting (Circa 12,500 assets). These are programmed to switch on at 100% light output and dim to 50% light output between 10pm and 05:30 am (GMT). They switch back up to 100% light output,  when required,  until switch off at a predetermined ambient light level.

Residential and Rural Areas (Circa 50,000) –Switch on at 80% light output and dim down to 30% light output between midnight and 05:30 am (GMT). They switch back up to 80% light output, when required,  until switch off at a predetermined ambient light level."
